Steve Kruger has led TKO’s transformation from a volunteer-run group into a statewide nonprofit dedicated to protecting and enhancing Oregon’s hiking experience. Since becoming TKO’s first staff member in 2017, Steve has guided the growth of a professional team and thousands of volunteers who care for trails across Oregon’s coastlines, forests, and high desert landscapes.
With nearly 20 years of experience in parks and natural areas, Steve previously served with Oregon State Parks as a park ranger and manager in the Columbia Gorge and at L.L. “Stub” Stewart State Park. His career also includes roles in conservation, environmental education, and youth leadership in Wisconsin and California.
Passionate about connecting people to nature, Steve is driven by the power of community and believes that trails are essential pathways to health, belonging, and discovery.

Matthew Ruddy
PROGRAM DIRECTOR
he/him
Matthew Ruddy is an educator and conscious contributor with more than 24 years of experience in education and development; ranging from K-12 classrooms in diverse neighborhoods, to graduate school teaching candidates, workshops, conferences, and building equity within teams and organizations. As a lifelong lover of the outdoors and an aggressively average mountain biker, his commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging is a core value rooted in the belief that we all belong outside. His recent projects and partnerships include serving as the co-leader of a BIPOC Nature Network, Operation ROAM with Chad Brown’s “Love is King”, and moonlighting in the world of music production at venues and events around Portland. In his own words, “I believe Oregonians are finding common ground in our love for the outdoors and desire to learn from one another. It’s never a perfect process but we’re trying and it’s the trying that matters.”

Steven Moore
OPERATIONS DIRECTOR
he/him
Steven brings experience in nonprofit administration, operations, and development as well as a background in communications, editing, teaching, and database management. He’s an avid trail user and is excited to support TKO’s efforts to help people access Oregon’s natural spaces. Vito’s introduction to the trails and saw world began in 2009, with a Student Conservation Association pilot program in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. A passion for stewardship has taken him to Rocky Mountain National Park, Biscayne National Park and the Sonoran Desert National Monument. In 2015, life and work brought Vito to the Mt. Hood National Forest. Here he has found a variety of opportunities and partnerships through the Forest Service, non-profits, and concessionaires. Keeping his saw tuned and eyes on the trails, he’s excited to join TKO.

Sam Getchell
Stewardship Manager
he/him
Sam Getchell comes to TKO with 10+ years of trails experience; most of those years with the Forest Service. He began his trails career in 2014 swinging vintage axes with the hardy White Mountain NF trail crews. His summers were spent in Washington in the Glacier Peak Wilderness, the Frank Church in Idaho, and the Gravelly range in Montana. In 2021 he began work as the trails foreman for the Mt. Hood National Forest. There he began leading crews, managing trails projects, and teaching saw classes with TKO. Over the ensuing years he became the trail crew supervisor, leading to the skills and development that brings him to TKO today.
Working on trails is Sam’s passion, one that began at an early age building bike trail structures with his Dad in New Hampshire. Besides his love for working outdoors, the people are what kept Sam coming back to the woods each summer. When Sam isn’t pulling a saw, you can find him soaking in hot springs or sleeping in his camper on our wonderful public lands.
