Upper Oneonta Trail Party

June 20 at 8:30 am - 4:00 pm

Free
Cutting and clean up of major tree fall on upper Oneonta and Franklin Ridge trails, using cross cut saws and wilderness log moving technique

Crew Leader:Pete Reagan

Hike Distance:  Up to 8 miles roundtrip

Elevation Change: up to 1000’

Hike Difficulty: Strenuous

Work Difficulty: Moderate Complexity

Work Description: Log removal/mitigation

The goal of this trip is to clean up major winter storm damage from fallen trees on the Oneonta Trail #424 and adjacent Franklin Ridge Trail #427.

Potential cancellation:   Because the fire-affected zone is potentially more hazardous than other sites where we work, the crew leader may decide to cancel the work party the day before, based on weather conditions. We will not work in high winds, excessive rain/heat, or potential ice events.  Volunteers are advised to check their emails the night before in case there are unanticipated work party cancellations. All work and hiking will be above 2500 ft, and reasonably shaded.

Project description: There are several areas of major blowdown on these trails mainly in more severely fire affected areas. Our job is to clear these trees off the tread

Hiking information: 2 miles one way on well maintained trails with some mild ascents and descents to the beginning of the work site, up to 1 more mile to the far (lower) end of the work area; with ups and downs in the trail totally up to about 1200 ft (round trip)

What to expect:  A mandatory detailed safety discussion will be held before work begins. COVID 19 procedures and warnings are srtill in effect Please watch this COVID-19 safety orientation and then e-sign this waiver.

When filling out the waiver, the Land Manager is USFS, Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area

Additionally, all volunteers are required to complete this COVID-19 self-screening test 24 hours prior to the event (I will send a reminder). A CDC alternative is available here. The results of either questionnaire must indicate that there are no medical concerns or medical attention needed. At the trailhead, Crew Leaders will assess that no health changes have occurred since the volunteer did their last health self-assessment and that they feel safe to participate that day.

What to bring: Lunch, snacks, and plenty of water (recommend 2-3 liters), and a day pack to carry it all in.

What to wear:

  • Boots (Please wear something sturdy that will protect your toes from sharp tools. No tennis shoes allowed!)
  • Work gloves (loaner gloves available)
  • Long sleeved shirts and pants.
  • Rain gear as appropriate for the weather
  • TKO will supply hard hats and safety glasses

Directions: From East or West, take I-84 to Exit 22 to Corbett. Take Corbett Hill Rd 1.4 mi to Historic Columbia River Hwy. Turn left on Historic Columbia River Hwy. After 1.9 mi take slight right onto Larch Mountain Rd. Follow Larch Mountain Rd approx 11.5 miles (3 miles before the road ends at the trailhead parking lot) and you will see TKO crew leaders at the access gate with a Trailkeepers sign.

If you have questions or concerns about the work party, please contact pete.reagan@trailkeepersoforegon.org or volunteer@trailkeepersoforegon.org.
