Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an international movement to train everyday people. Through the course we learn to recognize, understand, and respond to mental health challenges and crisis situations just like physical first aid courses train people to respond to physical injuries.
This is an Adult Mental Health First Aid USA course that lasts about 8 hours and provides a 3-year certification. First, you will work through about two hours’ worth of content in an online learning system at your own pace and on your own schedule. Then, you’ll join us for a day of in-person learning, discussion, and educational exercises that will help you feel more confident in putting your knowledge to use.
Some topics that we discuss in this course include anxiety, depression, diagnoses involving psychosis, reactions to traumatic events, substance use including alcohol and opioids, aggressive behavior, eating disorders, and more. These topics can be difficult to speak openly about in our culture, but we will “smash the stigma” around mental illness by moving through these subjects with directness and care.
MHFA is valued at $170/person. We are able to offer this course on a sliding scale thanks to TKO’s generous donors, and our instructor donating her time. Please select the rate that works for you when you register.
Important note about the hybrid learning model: The online self-paced portion of this course must be completed before the in-person portion begins. Although our instructor may send limited reminders when something is left incomplete, it is your responsibility to ensure you do the online work ahead of time and to reach out if you need help navigating the learning system.
