Our Mission
Trailkeepers of Oregon (TKO) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire action to protect and enhance the Oregon hiking experience through advocacy, stewardship, outreach and education.
TKO was born out of Portlandhikers.org, a free forum for hiking enthusiasts to share their trip reports, photos and tips for great places to hike. One day a group of volunteers from the online community banded together to restore the Vista Ridge Trail, which was in jeopardy of being lost to neglect and lack of maintenance. Those inspired individuals decided that that they could do more than just share trip reports and photos. They decided that trails needed active champions and engaged stewards - and TKO was born.

Today TKO manages Portlandhikers.org as an extension of its outreach and education efforts. TKO also organizes and leads advocacy and volunteer trail maintenance activities. Currently TKO activities are centered around the Portland area, but we aim to serve the entire state in the future.
Cultivating a Stewardship Culture
How much have trails given to you? It's time to give back! We are encouraging all trail uses to devote one day of trailwork for each 100 miles hiked. But more than this, it's time for us to take ownership for what is already ours! TKO hopes to:
- Turn more Oregonians into hikers
- Turn more hikers into trail stewards
- Turn more trail stewards into advocates
- Turn more advocates into owners of our trails legacy.
